. new information about the nomination of the former senator, chuck hagel, to be the nation's next secretary of defense. let's go to capitol hill to dana bash. what are you learning? >> reporter: cnn has learned that chuck hagel's confirmation to be the next defense secretary appears to be all but certain. the reason we can report that is by some excellent digging by our producers. what they have found out is they have found at least five republican senators who have said that they would oppose any filibuster to block hagel's nomination. so mathematically what that would mean is even if there would be a filibuster, which is still an if, he would likely have the votes to overcome that and would go on to become the next defense secretary. they talked to a lot of senators, a lot of senators' offices and they came up with five. only two of them are actually going to support hagel's nomination, but the other three, richard burr, john mccain, and todd coburn have all told us they would oppose a filibuster if it came to that. we don't know when the vote will happen. first he has to go thr

of chuck hagel you were outspoken. >> fistly, i don't think he's anti-semitic. i have no basis for saying that. i do believe he's hostile to israel, but he has a right to his position. tom friedman, his first sponsor that i read in his column said he is not mainstream. this is tom friedman who is advocating hagel. then his opponents say he's not main treatment. why would you want a guy who's not mainstream in charge one of the biggest appointments, the defense department. if you don't believe in sanctions and you don't believe in war, what do you think we should do as it relates to stopping iran from getting the nuclear bomb? he believes that there should be much greater light distance, separation between israel and the united states. so as to make the arab countries more friendly to us. they want to kill us. they want to kill christians and jews and they say they're going to convert either voluntarily or by force. and that's been their history. so why would we want to jettison, which is really the way i feel he's acting, the only democratic state in the area that we can rely on, israel,

between president obama, joe biden, secretary of state john kerry, potential secretary of defense chuck hagel i would argue, is the most pro iran engagement u.s. national security cabinet since the 1979 revolution. this is an administration which desperately does want to do a deal with iran to diffuse the nuclear issue and to gradually reduce our footprint in the middle east. they certainly don't want to the go to war. and i'm not sure if atollah khamenei understands this is going to be the best deal he's going to get from the united states. >> suarez:. >> brown: well, the demands for the u.s. and others seems fairly clear and the push for sanctions go on. the iranians say they want the sanctions lifted first. so have you heard anything that suggests it's a sort of vicious cycle in that regard? >> this has also been a perennial challenge that synchronizing negotiations, who makes the first overture, but it's not within the realm of possibilities that the u.s. ngre or presiden oma is going to remove sanctions before the negotiations start and i do see the two sides still being quite far
